Will Brown

DIGITAL ART DIRECTOR

THE MODEST AND SHY SURFER FROM NARRABEEN SAT DOWN WITH US TO TALK ABOUT HIS START IN THE INDUSTRY, CANNES AWARDS AT 24, MICK FANNING AND MORE. WIDELY CONSIDERED THE ONE OF THE BEST MID WEIGHTS IN THE INDUSTRY, WILL GOT HIS START WITH HAVAS UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF ECD STEVE COLL. ONE OF HIS FIRST IDEAS WENT ONTO GLOBAL CANNES SUCCESS (FUNDAWEAR FOR DUREX) PAIRING WITH JACK NUNN (NOW AT SPECIAL GROUP).  HE DIDNT STOP THERE. HE LEFT TO GO WORK IN LONDON AND WITHIN A YEAR, PICKED UP ANOTHER FEW INTERNATIONAL GONGS. THE PRODIGAL SON IS NOW BACK ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST.

You’ve worked on some cool campaigns in your short career, what is the one that stands out the most?

THAT’S A TOUGH ONE AY, THE ONE I’M PROUDEST OF MOST WAS A CAMPAIGN WE DID FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION AND COMMONWEALTH COMMISSION IN ENGLAND. FOR 100TH ANNIVERSARY FOR OF WW1, WE CREATED AN INTERACTIVE MAP ALLOWING PEOPLE  TO PLACE A VIRTUAL POPPY AND COMMEMORATE WITH A MESSAGE. WE WON A WEBBY FOR THAT BUT SERIOUSLY WASNT ABOUT THE AWARD, MEANT ALOT TO GIVE BACK TO A GOOD CAUSE.

“I WAS BUSIER THAN A ONE ARMED BRICKLAYER IN BAGHDAD”

How did you get your start with Havas?

I WAS A DESIGNER WORKING ON SONY (BANNERS, EDM, STORY BOARDING ETC). I WAS BUSIER THAN A ONE ARMED BRICKLAYER IN BAGHDAD FROM MEMORY (I STOLE THAT FROM THE BADGER). I STAYED PATIENT AND KEPT CHIPPING AWAY UNTIL ONE DAY I WAS CALLED INTO STEVIE C’S ROOM AND TOLD I WAS TEAMING UP WITH A COPY DUDE CALLED JACK NUNN. HE GOES ALRIGHT ON THE WORK FRONT. CANT GET PAST HIS PA THESE DAYS THOUGH BUT WE GOT ON LIKE A SEAGUL IN A HOT CHIP SHOP AND THE REST IS HISTORY.

One of your first major ideas won at Cannes, how did that come about?

WE WE’RE FORTUNATE TO BE GIVEN A BRIEF FROM DUREX TO COME UP WITH A COOL APP / CREATIVE DIGITAL CAMPAIGN. IT WAS LATE INTO THE EVENING, ME AND JACK WE’RE SITTING AROUND DRINKING BEERS TALKING LIKE A COUPLE OF 12 YEAR OLD GOOFS ON THE SUBJECT OF LONG DISTANT ROMANCE.  WE JUST STARTING PLAYING WITH THE IDEA OF AN APP THAT CONNECTS WITH CREATIVE TECH. BASICALLY UNDERWEAR THAT VIBRATES PUT IN A NICE CREATIVE WRAP.

Who is your inspiration?

MICK FANNING IS MINE. I’D TURN GAY FOR HIM, LITERALLY WOULD. HIS APPROACH TO LIFE AND HANDLING SUCCESS IS BRILLIANT. HE HAS A RED HOT GO AND GOES AFTER EVERYTHING WITH STYLE AND MODESTY. LOVE A BIT OF THE BADGER TOO. NICK CUMMINS AUSTRALIAN RUGBY STAR.

How would you describe your style?

I CAN’T DRESS FOR SHIT MATE IF THAT’S WHAT YOU MEAN. NEVER BEEN ONE FOR FANCY CLOTHES. RATHER SPEND THAT MONEY ON A NEW SURF BOARD OR SNOWBOARD TRIP. I’M A PRETTY CHILLED PERSON, TAKES A LOT TO PISS ME OFF. ON THE WORK FRONT, WHEN IT HAS TO GO, IT HAS TO GO. I THINK I HAVE A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO THE WORK. THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR GREAT WORK, SAME WITH THE STRAIGHT STUFF TOO.

And lastly, what are you up-to at the moment?

APART FROM SNOW-BOARING IN JAPAN THIS WEEKEND, I’VE JUST STARTED A NEW GIG AT A CREATIVE INDEPENDENT IN SYDNEY. GOT SOME VERY TALENT PEOPLE IN THERE SO WATCH THIS SPACE. STILL ENJOYING MY DESIGN AS WELL AS NEW IDEAS.
